Top Products of 2013

Today I wanted to re-cap some of my favourite educational and training-related products I’ve featured on the site for the year. I tend to get a lot of these sent to me and very few of them wind up impressing me enough to warrant sharing with you. For each product where the person spends considerable time, effort and money in creating a product that is both educational and aesthetically professional, there’s a dozen where the person just figured out how to turn a word document into a PDF and called it an e-book.

As a result, the list is fairly short, but is packed with only gold. Let’s get into it.

1. High Performance Handbook

HPH-main

This was a massive product, featuring multiple programs, adjustments for various equipment, 200 exercise coaching demonstration videos, a slick nutrition resource, bonus material, and a lot more. The cool thing about this product is he lays it all out with a self-assessment, so you know you’re getting a specific program instead of just a one-size fits all program.

2. Off the Floor

OTF-Cover1-300x300

I can’t tell you how many books, textbooks, videos, seminars, and workshops I’ve been to that have discussed deadlifting technique, set up, application, regressions, progressions, and all the different variations you could imagine. I got an advanced copy from Dave Dellanave, the author of this one, and was thinking it would be re-hashing everything old under the sun. I was wrong.

Dave did a great job of covering the usual bases, but also brought something new to the table in biofeedback testing, and how to adjust your setup to get a method that your body likes the most and can generate the greatest strength and power. He also showed some uncommon deadlift techniques, as well as a deeper level of accessory training for the lift, with things like old-school strongman methods, odd grip training, and a bunch of other cool things. This one surprised me, in a good way.

3. Bulletproof Athlete

BPA-Cover-Photo

Another all-encompassing program from one of the premier strength coaches in the world, this audacious program takes a very wide berth in what it looks to accomplish, from breathing patterns to sleep to nutrition to a periodized training program that can be used with a lot of people effectively, anyone can get something from this. I read the entire thing on the plane trip to Boston and found it to be really well put together considered a lot of very important factors a lot of people tend to miss. What better way to start the new year than with a 16 week program that all you have to do is just show up and do it?

4. Examine.com Supplement Goals Reference Guide

329-3

Someone finally did it. Someone finally compiled all the current research on supplements into a single volume, all while organizing it by what the goal outcome is and what supplements help, how strong the evidence that the supplement actually does what it claims, and cites every reference out there on each supplement, even ones you had no idea existed. For instance, glutamine has shown minimal to no benefits for humans in terms of joint health, pain relief or anything, really, yet people will willingly shell out $50 a month to take this placebo. Wouldn’t it be better to spend a couple bucks to figure out what supplements actually workfor what you’re looking for instead?

5. Functional Stability Training: Lower Body

FST-DVD-COVER-LB-3

A great video series from Eric Cressey and Mike Reinold, this series opened my eyes to a couple of simple yet should be common sense concepts that have played a big role in how I train, present, and teach others. Things like neutral alignment in varied positions, leg length differences, and a bunch of other things. This is definitely more of the technical science-heavy kind of program, so if you have no anatomy training it could be a bit of a challenging journey to get through, but for those medical professionals, trainers, and hardcore fitness enthusiasts out there, it’s a great resource to give some serious thought and application.

6. Post Rehab Essentials

PRE-header-final

You knew I had to talk a bit about my own stuff here. If you haven’t checked out my signature video series yet, you definitely should. It’s over 10 hours of me talking and showing exercises, you get continuing education credits, and can learn things about stuff.
