Stuff to Check Out: Super Busy Week Edition

As is usually the case after coming home from a seminar or workshop, I usually have a bunch of stuff to catch up on, like in-person clients, distance clients, emails, writing, and throw in the mix the fact that we listed our house last week and had our first showing last night, it’s always a fun adventure. On top of that I’m off to Las Vegas again tomorrow to spend the weekend with my brothers as my oldest brother is turning 40 this year. I’m the baby of the family and also the smallest of the brothers, and if you’ve met me in person and remarked at how I’m taller in real life than I appear on the interwebz, you can appreciate that for what it’s worth. The timing to leave is awesome because today we woke up to about 5 cm of fresh snow. Being in Canada, this isn’t abnormal, but it definitely sucks the life out of you, especially since I rode my bike to and from work yesterday.

But even though this has been a relatively short week, there’s been a lot of fun stuff going on, so I wanted to give you a quick heads up on some cool things.

#1: Thoughts on the Fitness Summit – Harold Gibbons

Harold is one of the ninjas running the clubhouse at Mark Fisher Fitness in New York City, and was gracious enough to write a very good overview of his thoughts on this years Fitness Summit in which I was fortunate enough to present. He’s attended before and noted how the event has evolved and improved over time, so it was nice to see him reflecting not just on whether this year was good or bad, but on how it’s moving in a very positive direction.

#2: Best Exercises In Ever – T-Nation by yours truly

While I’m sure many looking at this title will say “we see this all the time right here,” I wanted to take a bit of a different tone with it. Admittedly, on my site the title is more of a tongue in cheek overuse of hyperbole, but I wanted this to be a very broad outline on some exercises that could stand the test of time and still be used today in a broad sense by a lot of people for various goals. Essentially, if it was an “exercise” used to build a civilization, conquer a civilization, or sustain a civilization, it was a good’er.

#3: How to Breathe While Working Out and Running – Kellie Davis

Kellie asked me to contribute to this article on breathing techniques and I was able to explain some of the methods for developing higher levels of intraabdominal pressure using valsalva breathing methods. While the title suggests working out and running may be different, the separation was explained within the article, so check it out to see what it’s all about.

#4: Spotlight on Injuries Plantar Fasciitis – Lindsay Somerset

My considerably better half interviewed me for this piece on foot pain, what it is and what to do about it. I think it turned out alright and judging by the responses on it so have many others.

#5: Complete Hip & Shoulder Training Workshop – Tony Gentilcore and myself

That’s right, we’re teaming up again to bring you another weekend workshop series, this time focusing our energies on 2 of the most involved joints with strength training. We’re going to cover everything from anatomy to assessments, corrective strategies, progressions and regressions, and higher threshold training concepts and coaching cues for everything under the sun. We have dates confirmed for Edmonton and St. Louis, and are working on others in Austin, TX, Los Angeles, and potentially Chicago as well. Come check it out and deadlift with us!

#6: Business & Coaching Seminar – Jim Laird & Myself

This one-day seminar in Edmonton with Jim and myself will cover some of the important aspects of training business, as well as how to coach and improve your clients lifting ability. While a lot of people will put all of their resources into learning about coaching and fail to understand the business, others still will have a grasp on the business but fail to understand how to actually coach a common lift. This workshop will help to bring the two sides of the coin to the same table and help trainers walk away with a much better understanding of how to develop their own unique culture, service orientation, and delivery of their coaching.

#7: 15 Tips to Unleash Your Athleticism – Eric Bach

I helped contribute to this very outstanding article in addition to a bunch of other “who’s who” list of coaches, and it turned out excellent. Even if you’re not interested in building or expressing athleticism, it gives some awesome take aways for training yourself or others.

Have a great week everyone!!
