Stuff to Check Out: Halloween Edition

With tonight being Halloween, I have a couple things to get organized and also a full day of training clients, so today’s post will be short and sweet. We’ll start off with a pic of me from a few years ago where I pretty much blew everyone’s mind and more than a few co-workers couldn’t even look at me for the day.

1. Dean & Tony’s Los Angeles Awesome Workshop

Space is filling up quickly for this bad boy that we’re holding November 22-23 at Crossfit 714 in Orange, California, and the early bird pricing of $399 for the 2 day event is ending this weekend and will go up to $499 as of Monday. Act quickly to get your learn on for things like coaching, breathing, core training, beef jerky eating and Canadian slang terms, plus a deep appreciation of the fact that you don’t live somewhere where -40 is a realistic temperature to expect in the winters.

2. Canadian Strength Symposium

It takes a lot for me to want to travel to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, especially in the middle of January, but this event will be well worth the travel. January 23-25th, this event will feature myself, Dr. Stuart McGill, Andre Benoit, a huge host of other speakers, and also feature a strongman and powerlifting competition. It’s going to be amazing.

3. Lumbar Disc Nomenclature: Research Paper

This is more for the anatomy and clinical geeks out there, but I found this article really interesting in the number of variations in the spinal discs, as well as how many variants have different names, plus the illustrations were awesome too.

4. Building the Perfect Home Gym – Dan John

Dan’s an amazing guy whom I’ve had the good fortune to meet a couple of times. He’s a great coach, adept at making complex concepts simplified into their bare elements, and getting to the most beneficial manners of training out there. Plus he’s funny as hell and can write incredibly well. This article was timely, as Lindsay and I are looking at the beginning stages of building our own basement gym when the new house is ready to roll.

5. Why I’ll Never Run With Music Outdoors – Lindsay Somerset

The other day as I was leaving work, I watched a young girl step right over a $20 bill without noticing as she was so engrossed in her phone and what it was showing her. I could only assume it was something along the lines of “I don’t have any money lmfao lol kittens stickers.” That’s how I envision teenage girls talking these days.

Along the same vein, Lindsay wrote a good piece about being distracted from the environment around you and how it might work better in your favour to not tune the rest of the world out when you’re running outside.

6. Thriller Workout – Cardigan Mark via Thrive as the Fittest

Since it’s Halloween, it’s only fitting to do a workout that’s inspired by one of the only replayable music videos and songs that would apply to Halloween. Yes, I’m completely talking about the Monster Mash.

Have fun out there this weekend. If possible, try to set up shop at a coffee shop tomorrow morning, close to a bar district near a university, and watch the procession of costume-wearers returning home on their own hilarious version of a “Walk of Shame” parade.
