Stuff to Check Out: Valentine’s Day Hangover Edition

Ahhh, love is in the air. At least it was yesterday. Maybe it’s just the off-gases from the refineries surrounding Edmonton. I don’t know. Either way, it was a Sunday, and I’m sure a lot of people expressed love and affection for their significant others.

And if you were single, you hopefully watched the dunk contest and tried to feel good about yourself.

Pretty sure they got those hops by testing out their box jumps.

This is pretty much the look on my face when I see a squat rack free in a commercial gym.

Okay, now onto the stuff to check out to begin working on next years’ Valentine’s Day.

  1. Strength Expert Secrets DVD set

Last year a couple of Norwegians flew all across North America interviewing some of the best strength coaches they could find. They even came to Edmonton for a little taste of home. In March. Props to them for that alone.

They hung out for an entire day, then headed out to get more strength coaches into the mix. In total, they would spend time with Dan John, Tony Gentilcore, Jordan Syatt, Josh Bryant, Matt Kroc, Tim Henriques, Bud Jeffries, and myself for 8 action-packed DVDs, as well as 4 free programs to sweeten the deal.

If that doesn’t excite you, you’re dead on the inside and don’t love puppies or kitties.

You can pick up your DVD set with 4 free bonus programs today. Just click HERE to get your copy.

2. Masters of Movement video series

Last week was cool because we finally released the videos from the Masters of Movement seminar from last November, featuring Chris Duffin, Leo Totten, Charlie Weingroff and myself professionally filmed in New York at Halevy Life.

This was 2 full days, giving each presenter a half day to cover their topics in depth to give those attending and those watching a much more thorough understanding of what to do, how to use the information presented, and how to incorporate it into their training than if there was just one hour for each presentation as is the case in many conferences.

The entire video series is available for digital download, and if you enter the promotional code “BUY20” you can save 20% off on the purchase of the entire package. It’s worth it alone for watching Charlie rock out the clasped knife technique. You can also purchase individual presentations if you’re not interested in getting the full package, but it’s well worth it to get exposed to some different perspectives and techniques from some world-class coaches and experts. And me. I talk about stuff.

4.  Research – Whole Body Cryotherapy For Preventing and Treating Muscle Soreness after Exercise in Adults: Costello et al

Cryotherapy (being exposed to temperatures of or lower than -100 degrees Celsius) seems to be a treatment gaining popularity in many sports centers. In this metanalysis, the authors say that in the papers where there wasn’t a “high risk of bias” there was not much of a perceived benefit for using it.

In my experiences living in a cold climate, I would have to agree. Cold exposures rarely make people feel better, whether for short term or longer. Perhaps there is a benefit to perfusion of blood to the skin in order to prevent freezing of the tissues after sublimation pulls off the layer of moisture on the surface of the skin, but in terms of getting the cold to permeate into the muscle, it would be a bit of a stretch to say it could actually do that without substantial tissue damage to your skin and subcutaneous tissues. Water tends to freeze from the outside in, which is why lakes can have water under a layer of ice and the fish in the lake can live quite comfortably.

Also, old people tend to retire where it’s warmer because it helps them to move and feel good. You never see a lot of people retire and move to Winnipeg.

5. Ready, Mindset, Lift: Mindfulness for Optimal Workouts – Dr. Lisa Lewis

Lisa is a chartered psychotherapist who works a lot on mindset training, athletic performance and getting people to do the stuff they know is good for them without letting their own thoughts, fears and hesitations get in their own way. This article is an awesome reminder to both newbies in the gym and seasoned lifters alike who likely all struggle with their own motivation and desire to train, and also to focus on what they’re actually doing inside the gym and from rep to rep.
