Some Upcoming Kick-assery

So after spending the last half of last week in a mind-numbingly boring CPR and first aid course, I got the chance to sit down for dinner with Jeff Cubos and our respective wives for a couple of plates full of steak and veggies, and an almost anaphylactic moment on Jeff’s part. Good thing I had that CPR course!!

Then yesterday the bottom dropped out of the thermostat, which resulted in some “minor” car issues, meaning I have a 2000 pound lump of iron in my back yard that as you’re probably reading this I’m cursing through clenched teeth as I get a tow truck to haul it to the shop to get fixed. My hope is that it’s only a minor annoyance and there’s no major damage, but knowing my luck the mechanic will decide to bend me over and grab a handful of synthetic for what’s to come.

On a brighter note, I wanted to give you the head’s up on some really cool things that I have coming up in the month of February. While I’d love to say I have my hands full training clients and writing various articles on health and fitness, the truth is I get bored very easily and tend to take on 50 projects at once, making time management a necessity that I’m still trying to figure out. “10 programs to do for tomorrow? I can space it out while I read an article of rotator cuff strengthening and watch a DVD on program design, all before going to get groceries and after I finish doing the dishes, right? OH CRAP I HAVE TO FINISH WRITING THAT ARTICLE FOR TONIGHT!! Hey, that looks like a cool program in the App Store, I should get it and see what I can use it for. How much are the Patriots up by now?? I’m hungry.” This is my usual internal running dialogue, which means if something like a sore car pops up it throws me for a loop and also makes me hate life for a few minutes until I focus on something else for the time being.

First, I’ll be co-hosting Charlie Weingroff’s appearance in Calgary at the Edgemont World Health club, which means a very large man will be talking about all things rehab, strength, and various types of awesome. This 2-day course will no doubt be one of the highlights of my own educational calendar this coming year.

For those who may be interested, where else will you get a chance to learn from a guy who trains Marines, is a doctor of physical therapy, and can rock an 800 pound back squat all while being obsessed with pro wrestling? Yup, it’s gonna be totally geek-tastic for any fitness or rehab dorks out there.

Next up, I’m going to be speaking at the Edmonton canfitpro conference February 25th, and will be going through how to develop a vertically integrated fitness business. It’s pretty much going to set a lot of pre-conceptions about how personal trainers can make their job into a career and to earn a decent income, and also showcase some pretty cool people I had a chance to talk with about their own businesses and how they managed to become successful. If you’re a trainer looking to make more money, whether you work in a big box chain or own your own studio or even have absolutely no personal skills and live in front of your internet connection, you’ll get a kick out of this seminar.

In one of my own personal “what the eff was I thinking?” scheduling moments of my career, I’m going to have to hoof it out of the Edmonton seminar and haul ass down to Calgary for the next day to teach a one-day intensive Post Rehab Essentials workshop on February 26th. This workshop will be hosted by Andrea Thatcher, and will go through some of the primary concerns that every trainer needs to know when working with injured clients. We’ll go through anatomy, physiology, assessments, and program designs all in one day, which means anyone attending this workshop will have to bring a bucket as their brains ooze out their ears by the end of the day after cramming so much knowledge into their domes.

Aside from all this going on, I’m still going to be pumping out some more blogging awesomeness as well as training my usual clientele, so I’ve got some good stuff coming up in the next few weeks. Let’s all have a moment of silence for any sleep I may have had in the month of February, but just a moment.

Okay that’s enough.

Top it off with the fact that I’m planning on getting back to heavy deadlift again in order to get closer to my 500 pound goal. Sure it may be a tough goal to hit, but I’ll get a lot more out of something that’s tough than something that’s easy. If deadlifts were easy, they’d be called ellipticals.
