It's Randomly Hot Out Side

We’re stuck in a little bit of a heat wave here in Edmonton, and by little heat wave I mean hotter than any other time on record. The thermometer is hitting between 32-37 degrees celsius (that’s 90-100 farenheit for those south of the border), meaning this year we’ve seen close to a 70 degree temperature swing from the coldest day in winter to the hottest day in summer. (Note: -40 is the same in celsius and farenheit).

While I’m sure talking about the weather isn’t quite as exciting as a nun on roller skates blasting Motley Crue from an 80’s style boom box, it’s kind of a big deal here. S big, Lindsay and I decided to finally purchase a portable air conditioner for us and the dogs to make sure we could actually fall asleep each night instead of sweltering in a pool of sweat and anger. It’s actually pretty sweet.

On the topic of the heat, yesterday Lindsay had a doctor’s appointment in Calgary with a back specialist (last one, and she’s feeling great!!), and when we were getting set to walk into the building, we happened to hear a dog barking from the parking lot. Now this was an open air parking lot, in direct sun, so hearing a dog barking from inside a vehicle when it’s 30 degrees at 11am is a little disconcerting to say the least.

We were early for the appointment, so we checked on the dog, who wasn’t in distress at this point, waited for about 5-10 minutes, then called the SPCA to see if they could send someone to help. It doesn’t take long for a car to get extremely hot in that kind of heat, so my concern was that it would take another 10 or 20 minutes for someone to come and help get the dog out safely if needed.

I was prepared to go all 2 Fast 2 Furious, whip off my shirt, wrap it around my fist and punch out the window if needed, but thankfully some peace officers responded quickly, checked on the dog, and stayed around until the owner finally came out, about 25 minutes after I first heard the dog. She said she was only gone 10 minutes and that she would never let anything happen to her dog because he was her baby, but it doesn’t take long for a car to get dangerously hot. If it’s that hot, leave your dog at home while you run errands.

I was a step away from throat-punching her, but I figured it would be kind of bad in front of the peace officers and all. Hopefully she doesn’t pull that kind of crap again, and if she does I hope she has her dog taken away from her.

Speaking of hot but in a good way, Lindsay raced the ITU triathlon in Edmonton this past weekend, managed to complete it in 10th place for the national championships after not racing for a couple years and in the sweltering heat, and also got herself a  shiny new qualifying spot for the world championships in London next year where she’ll get to represent Canada and ride the same course as in the Olympics this year!!

She’s pretty excited, and I’m very proud of her, but also excited as neither of us has been to England before. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to spend some time sightseeing and maybe even heading into the south of England inside Somerset county, as there’s a township called Dean.

That’s right folks, there’s a town called Dean, Somerset in the south of England. I think if I get a chance to go there, my mere presence may disrupt the Matrix enough to cause existence as we know it to cease, sort of like when Kramer went to 1st street and 1st avenue on Seinfeld.

So since going across the pond will be probably a little expensive, it would be great if you could do a solid favour for me as well as for yourself and pick up a copy of Post Rehab Essentials. It’s a great resource that’s recieved high praise from a lot of industry heavy hitters, contains more video than there are hours in the morning, gives NSCA continuing education credits, is only $129, and can help me see my new dream of arriving in London turn into a reality, maybe even with an upgrade to business class. Check it out HERE.

Something else you should definitely check out is a free fitness comic book created by (near) bestselling author and creator of thePTDC.com. As someone who loves comic books, this is really well done and I have to commend him for taking a distant concept and bringing it to life. Check out the exploits of Mighty Trainer for free HERE.

Odds are that Mighty Trainer will have something to say in future episodes regarding the reliance on spin class for weight loss. It’s all fine and dandy once in a while, but the real fun begins when you see hardcore spinners who show up to each and every class, complete with spandex spin suits and special shoes, looking like they’re ready to rock out in the Tour de Nowhere. This will pretty much be their anthem then.

If they’re looking to do long duration spin classes, I’m wondering if this article HERE has any implication to them, which showed extended time in the saddle can lead to women having, well, issues. Those bike seats are hard, and not everyone looks to get some good quality padded shorts. Interestingly enough, guys are just as susceptible, as I’m sure any guy whose done a long duration mountain bike ride and had a sleeping leg sensation creep into an area that should never have a sleeping leg sensation.

We’ll leave today on a high note. Have a great day everyone!!
