Cool Stuff Worth Checking Out

I’ve got a pretty busy weekend ahead of me. I have a bunch of programs to write, a few articles to mash together for various sites, and a new assignment for an as to yet unnamed business venture which could bring me to New York a little more frequently, but that will have to wait for a bit to discuss further.

On top of that, my wife is racing a triathlon to prep for our trip to London in a few weeks so she can represent Canada in the World Triathlon Championships, so she’s been going crazy with her training, and I deadlifted the other day.

Enough with the jibber jabber. Let’s talk other people’s cool stuff.

1. The Case Against Single Leg Deadlifts – Dave Dellanave

This was probably one of the most coherent articles I’ve seen to counter the argument that single leg training does everything. Dave approached it in a respectful, evidence-based (in his observations in training himself and dozens of his clients) that single leg training doesn’t replicate the same types of forces as compound bilateral strength movements, even if the main joints and movement patterns being used are the exact same. He also boasts a 315+ 1 leg deadlift, and set a world record in a deadlift variation known as the Jefferson Deadlift, so the guy knows his stuff regarding strength.

My primary use for single leg deadlifts in training my clients has been as a grooving movement to train a single leg hip hinge, specifically when there’s a lateral stability deficit that could cause the individual to deadlift by shifting more towards one hip or the other, or possibly rotating their torso to find stability. It’s great when used with lower loads and as a grooving mechanism, but some of the benefits get lost in translation when the loads go up, as Dave succinctly points out.

2. Goodlife Says its Partnership with Dare Cookies wont Help Sell Cookies – Dr. Yoni Freedhoff

I wasn’t aware of this partnership, probably because I don’t pay much attention to either company, but apparently Goodlife Fitness, the largest health club chain company in Canada, has partnered with a cookie manufacturer, and will be cross promoting both brands. The goal, in their words, is to try to get those who eat the cookies to work out more. However, they also feature the cookies as part of a “healthy, nutritious” snack option for their members, as seen in their company blog. Yoni does a great job at sifting through the corporate shenanigans and points to the proverbial smoking gun in a great way with this piece.

3. Goat and a Yoga Ball

Why? Because it’s a goat being functional, that’s why.

4. Fenrihan: Shaving and grooming stuff for guys

Okay, it’s not fitness related but this is a store that just opened up online recently, and it’s pretty awesome. I purchase a double edged razer and some other products recently, and the quality and comfort are off the hook. If you’re into shaving and using stuff that makes you feel like a freakin boss, this would be the place to check out. I don’t get a dime from this, I just like it a lot.

Screen Shot 2013-08-22 at 7.13.37 PM5. The Tabata Delusion – Tony Gentilcore

Apparently you can become a certified Tabata Bootcamp (it’s even a trademarked term!!) instructor these days. The downside is very few people actually know they’re completely bastardizing the term Tabata, and misrepresenting the research that bears the lead authors name. Tony does a great job outlining some of the finer points of the protocol (with the help of Mark Young), and shows how doing 20 seconds of anything with 10 seconds of rest is NOT benefitting you in any way other than just making you do reps. In short, there’s no science behind you doing dumbbell arm circles or whatever the hell you’re doing over there.

I wrote a similar piece a few years ago HERE, and it parallels a lot of what Tony’s saying, just way less violent and way less effective manner at showing smarts mixed with sassy.

6. Move-Everywhere Ottawa, November 23, 2013

I’m going to be speaking at this event in Ottawa at Carleton University, and it’s shaping up to be pretty awesome. Not only are there going to be some big name speakers there – Alan Aragon, Jonathan Fass, Roman Jahoda, Jon Goodman, and apparently Mark Young will be lurking somewhere – it’s going to be a bit of a different type of event than most. While some presenters tend to either just lead workouts or stand around Powerpoints, we’re going to make it much more interactive, involve some cool presentation technologies, and get people thinking outside the proverbial cage.

This next week is a sort of pre-launch for the event, so if you’re interested in attending and seeing some top notch presenters – and me – rock your socks off, click the link above to check it out and save 15% off the registration cost until August 30th.

I even put together this little promotional video to showcase my topic and some smart anatomical stuff.

7. Cool praise of Post Rehab Essentials V.2.0

This past weekend I gave a 3 day seminar in Edmonton to trainers at my gym and managed not to sound like too much of a tool throughout the entire thing. I would like to think I put it together in a very logical and simple to understand thought process, and I guess a few people really got a lot out of it.

If you couldn’t be there this weekend, I recorded the entire thing when I presented it last year, and packaged it together for instant download. Not to brag or anything, but I think it’s some of my best work, and I’ve had a lot of people already check it out and say very kind things, plus show how they’ve helped themselves and a lot of their clients get stronger and healthier than they thought possible, all while not feeling like they’re on a rehab program.
