Stuff to Check Out: Back From Gotham Edition

Last week Lindsay and I spent the majority of the week in New York, which was an awesome trip and we had a blast. One of the highlights for her was setting a 20 minute PR in her triathlon, and one of the highlights for me was photobombing Tracy Anderson’s studio in Tribeca.

I tried to go inside but since I’ve been doing her workouts since April 1st of this year, I couldn’t open the door as it weighed more than 3 pounds. Fail.

We spent a good 8 days in Gotham and wrapped up with coming home late on Wednesday evening. Well, late Wednesday turned into early Thursday. It was an evening of delays. First there was a problem with the cockpit door where a screw was loose and it wouldn’t shut properly. As a result, we had to wait on the tarmack for an hour to wait for the specialty screw to get, uh, screwed.

From there the flight was pretty uneventful until we were about to land in Edmonton. The captain comes on and says there’s some serious thunderstorm activity in the area and to expect turbulence. Lindsay is a nervous flyer as it is, so she did her best Marge Simpson impression from the episode where Marge hates flying at the sheer mention of turbulence.

We buckled down and expected to do an 8 minute rodeo on the way into Edmonton, but the coolest thing was looking out each side of the plane and seeing massive thunderclouds in the distance with really rapid sheet lightning shooting across the sky. We threaded the needle and shot right between the two big storms circling the airport, got hit with some rain, and had probably one of the smoothest landings I’ve ever had.

Since the pilot had a lead foot on the way back due to the delay, we arrived a little sooner than expected, and since there was a couple other flights that were landing at the same time, there was no ground crew ready for us, which meant another wait on the tarmack for about 20 minutes.

Once we got inside the customs lineup was ridiculous. I have a Nexus card, which helps expedite customs and security, but since Lindsay doesn’t I had to wait in line with her. It would be a huge dick move to ditch her and cut the line, especially if we had to get luggage and stuff like that.

Speaking of luggage, there was another massive delay getting the baggage. After 40 minutes of standing and trying not to fall asleep on my feet surrounded by mouth breathers coming from Phoenix and Punta Cana, we finally got our bags. Oh, but it wasn’t over yet. Since we both decided that we should purchase goods in New York, we exceeded our allotment, and as a result had to pay tax on the extra. We had to wait for the cashier to take our payment, but apparently he was on a break or sleeping or just watching Wednesday night news and didn’t want to come check out who was standing at the till, so we had to wait another 20 minutes.

Then we couldn’t find our car in the parking lot.

So our flight that was supposed to land at 11:00 landed at 12:00 and we didn’t leave the airport until 1:20am. We got home around 2:30 and I collapsed, having to wake up early the next day to take the car in for some service. Within a day Lindsay was feeling run down and had some symptoms of minor electrolyte imbalances, which turned into a head cold. It’s not surprising considering how hot and humid New York was, but it sucked nonetheless, especially when she tried to race again on Sunday.

This brings a incredible coincidence to the table, as last week an article I contributed to for Precision Nutrition on exercising when you have a cold or flu went live.

So now that vacation is over, it’s back to the grindstone. My in-person clients are ready to kick it up a notch, at least the ones who aren’t going on a vacation themselves. Distance coaching clients are ready for some excellence via high-speed internet connections. My Beta Testing group is knocking off their third month on my super-secret program and ready to start month 4 in a couple weeks. On top of that I have a couple big presentations coming up which you should get in on.

First, I’m doing a webinar with the NSCA on Training Females vs. Males: Programming and Other Considerations. This is set to go for August 25th at 10am pst, 1pm est, and will be LIVE, so you can ask questions, get immediate replies, and even get some continuing education credits from the NSCA. Members only have to pay $10 to access it, and non-members pay $20, so it’s a pretty low cost way to get some credits for any trainers out there looking to not lapse their certifications for the year, and for those who are just fitness nerds without any credentials to maintain, you’ll get a kick out of it too.

After that, Tony Gentilcore and I are teaching a workshop in London, UK September 13-14. The good news and bad news is that the workshop is now SOLD OUT!!

The good news is we still have spaces available for our Washington DC seminar October 18-19th. We’ll be running 2 days of mirth and muscles at Underground Athletes in Sterling, VA, so if you’re interested in attending, you’d better act soon as space for this one is filling up quickly too.

===> Come Hang Out In DC NOW!!! <===

On top of that, we just got permits for the new house we’re looking to build, so hopefully they break ground soon. It’s going to be a busy fall, but I’d always rather be busy than bored.
