Stuff to Check Out: Merten’s Function Edition

What is a Merten’s Function, you ask? Well, it’s easily explained HERE as a count of square-free integers that have an even number of prime factors, minus those that have an odd number of prime factors, and since the date is February 18th today (218) and the Merten’s function corresponding to 218 is 3, I have 3 things for you to check out.

1. Edmonton Hip Training & Conditioning Seminar – June 3rd, 2015

This is going to be awesome. Not only do I not have to travel to the other side of the continent to have a speaking opportunity, but I get to roll out of my own bed, drive down 97th street, and drop knowledge all over the place, and then head home to sleep in my own bed at the end of the day. THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN A LOT!!

The seminar will be at SVPT Fitness & Athletics, a great facility for hosting some active hands-on events where I’ll show some of the ways I assess the hip, develop a coaching plan, and give exercise progressions & regressions to work with everyone from joint replacements to elite performance. And because I don’t have to travel, the cost savings to you are significant.

2. Big Posts on MensHealth.com and PUSH Strength websites

This past week saw me put up a guest post on the PUSH site talking about how I use their meter to measure bar speed during training sessions as an indicator to performance that day and how it can help you determine whether it will be a heavy, moderate, or light training day, regardless of what’s scheduled for your program that day. The device has been an awesome addition to training with myself and my clients, and takes a lot of guess work out of how to approach training loading and intensity.

Next up was 2 posts on the MensHealth.com website where I talked about a core exercise I’ve been playing with and some of the biggest lies the fitness industry seems to tell on a regular basis.

The band resisted dead bug is an exercise I featured in an article HERE a few weeks ago, and it got the attention of the Men’s Health editors, so I did a short interview on why I liked it and how to use it appropriately.

Lastly, in a piece published this past Sunday I talked about the 3 biggest untruths being repeated in the fitness industry. You’ll have to click the link to see what they are. While the article is short, each of the points by themselves could take an entire chapter in an exercise physiology textbook to give proper justice, but hopefully the succinct explanations will do.

3. Turning Things Around – Lindsay Somerset

This was a great post by my wife on her history struggling with eating disorders and exercise bulemia, and how she has been able to overcome them. While it’s still something that she occasionally wrestles with, her determination, grit and growth over the time I’ve known her is truly remarkable.

Lastly (I know it’s something in addition to 3, but it’s not a specific “Thing to Check Out” so chill) for those looking for an update on the house we’re currently building, we had our first walkthrough to see progress, and it was awesome to see now that the framing is complete, and all of the plumbing, electrical and HVAC are roughed in.

We’re hoping to move in sometime in the next 4 or 5 months, so now the real fun stuff gets to happen.
