I Need To Learn More

I’ll be the first to admit I don’t know everything about training, but I’ve always enjoyed trying to learn as much as possible with the caveat that it be something that I can either apply immediately or helps develop or re-enforce a thought process. I read research, text books, e-books, blogs and newspaper articles to see what people are talking about. I watch videos, attend workshops and conferences, and try to remain as unbiased as possible as to whether something is beneficial or just pie in the sky thinking.

Except of course for Tracy Anderson. That girl’s crazy.

I’ve borrowed from a lot of different people, some have worked really effectively and some haven’t, so I discard those methods that don’t work and try to hone in on the ones that do. This could mean everything from different ways to get rotator cuffs back in shape to how to deadlift more weight without ripping a hole in the space time continuum, to getting a marathon runner to a PR, to having someone limp into my gym with back to pain springing out after the first session without anything holding them back.

I’m willing to sit in anyone’s class room and accept what they’re saying, provided they have the merit to present it. I’ve sat through some god-awful lectures that made no sense and produced a ton of benefit afterwards, as well as some fire and brimstone “sermons” jam-packed with what seemed like amazing content but fizzled when it was put into action. I’m sure you’re no different.

With all that said, I’m trying to expand my level of knowledge on a continuous basis, so I need some help. I’m looking to take some new courses, attend new workshops, read different books, watch different videos, and essentially expand my personal bubble. They can be fitness related, rehab related, business related, whatever. To give you an example of what’s in store for this year, I’ll be attending the SFG Kettlebell Instructor certification in Salt Lake City in May, which is the new version of the RKC certification for working with kettlebells. I’m also attending the Certified Physical Preparation Specialist (CPPS) certification (and speaking there briefly) in New Jersey in March, which was developed by Joe DeFranco and James “Smitty” Smith. Aside from that, there’s a couple I’m on the fence about but not really convinced of yet.

This is where I need you. What kinds of courses or workshops would you recommend? They can be on-line, in person (North America only. I’m not at “baller status” just yet), books, or whatever that you feel have a tremendous value and have helped you. They can be on pretty much any range of topics relating to health and fitness, business or personal development, anything like that.

To make it even sweeter, I’ll give whomever gives the best suggestion a free DeanSomerset.com hoodie. These are limited edition hoodies, with only a few available around the world, so you’ll be in pretty sweet company. This will be a completely arbitrary selection based on what I feel like doing, but as with everyone out there I’ll cave in to sufficient peer pressure, so if everyone likes a specific entry, you can up-vote it a bunch of times to increase its’ clout.

Book: “Switch:How to Change Things When Change Is Hard.” Dan and Chip Heath. You’ll like it, I promise. Strategies to help people change their behavior, or at least understand why they are struggling to change their behavior.

  • deansomerset

Thanks Trevor. I read them both a few year ago and they were definitely awesome.

  • deansomerset

Thanks Scott. Michol, the guy who invented it, is from Edmonton. His mom used to work out at my gym. It’s a great product.

Evan Osar’s book “corrective exercise solutions for hip and shoulders”.
Inigo Mujika has a textbook “Endurance Training”.
Kalos Stenos and Dynami, from Gray Cook and Brett Jones.
I second the “Switch” recommendation, along with their other book Made to Stick. I also really enjoyed The Little Book of Talent.

“Knowledge and Nonsense: The Science of Nutrition and Exercise” by Jamie Hale. I like his message in the book: “Don’t be afraid to question authority and conduct your own research. Realize that the only true authority is science in itself. Approach fitness and nutrition with an open mind…”
“The Power of Habit: Why We do What We Do in Life and Business” by Charles Duhigg. Its a fun and interesting read. Its brings some science behind habits, and it is very narrative telling stories about how people (Martin Luther King, Michael Phelps..), or companies (P&G, Target..) used habits to succeed (unconciously or not).
I second the “The Little Book of Talent” by Daniel Coyle. Its a very short and good read. For the whole story behind the litte book read “The Talent Code”.

    Hey Dean,

For experiences take Martin Rooneys Training For Warriors Course. Not so much for the info, but for the mindset, coaching and mastery. I have to say that out of everything I have attended his were amazing. Really recommend it.

You will love the CPPS. Let me know when you are speaking as I have 2 coaches at HWTC I want to send down to get certified. It would be good to see you. If it’s in Jersey check out “Gotham City Diner” it’s unreal.

    Cheers.

    Rob

    Postural Restoration Institute courses.

  • deansomerset

I’ve seen some of the stuff they’ve put out and I’m definitely interested. There’s also an on-line course available, which could be beneficial, but I like the hands-on stuff, so I may have to attend a workshop when they’re held.

  • deansomerset

K-Star’s awesome. I’ve used quite a bit of his mobility work on myself and my own clients.

  • deansomerset

Thanks Rob. I’ll check him out.

  • deansomerset

    Awesome. Thanks!!

  • deansomerset

It’s en route. I actually ordered it this past weekend :-)

  • deansomerset

I’ve really enjoyed K-Star’s work and would love to attend a workshop with him. Thanks!!

  • deansomerset

I’ve seen some of their work, and like the fact that they have an on-line option available. That being said, I’d probably get more from attending and getting my hands dirty, so to speak.

  • deansomerset

    I’ve read them both :-)

  • deansomerset

I ordered Evan’s book this past weekend, I’ve heard some amazing things about it. Thanks!!

  • deansomerset

Oooh, good ones. I’ll have to dig through some of those soon.

  • deansomerset

I’ll definitely check out what he’s up to. Thanks bud.

Just curious, put is it weird that you’ll be attending a training (CPPS) that you’re on the board of directors for?

  • http://www.facebook.com/dean.somerset.9 Dean Somerset

I’m attending to make sure I’m up to speed to see what is being taught so that I can answer any questions, provide feedback, etc. Nothing beats seeing and doing it live.

I would highly encourage looking into the work of David Butler and Lorimer Moseley on pain. There are a lot of good talks online for free as a starting point, but I’m sure if you accept what they’re saying that you’ll want to buy everything they touch. There were a few mental hurdles to jump, but they’ve completely changed my understanding of how pain works for the better.

David Weinstock is doing some cool things with his NKT protocol, I’ll be at his Scottsdale, AZ course. http://www.neurokinetictherapy.com

As far as learning to use kettlebells go – have you considered working with Valery Fedorenko of the World Kettlebell Club? He offers private one on one workshops I believe. That or the IKSFA are probably two of the better kettlebell instruction courses. You won’t be learning Turkish Get Ups or two handed swings though, this is kettlebell training as it is done in Eastern Europe (the type of training that produces the benefits that are espoused in ‘Enter the Kettlebell’ and ‘Return of the Kettlebell’)

BioSignature Modulation course developed by Charles Poliquin. The 3-day Poliquin BioSignature Level 1 Course introduces you to the 12 sites BioSignature was founded on and how each site relates to hormones in our bodies.
Sounds so interesting. Hope that helps!
